Short-listed: Introduction to Pixel Group Processing
Peter McKenna, Manchester Metropolitan University
The learning object contains a Pixel Explorer that enables learners to explore the RGB values of pixels in relation to their neighbours and before and after the application of convolution masks. The Mask Applicator simulates the application of a convolution mask to pixels chosen by the learner, and takes the learner through the processing, step by step. The learner can drag and drop masks onto an image, and can enter in and apply their own kernels. The learner is guided and their understanding scaffolded, but the focus is on user exploration, control and construction of understanding. The learning object has been designed to be decoupled from specific learning contexts, and so can be located across a range of curriculum areas where deep understanding is desirable, e.g. multimedia, RGB colour and web markup, introductory image processing, advanced Photoshop, photography.
